Dryers For Africa in Lydenburg
Dryers For Africa has generously donated the use of a dehydrator to a charity organisation in Lydenburg.
The Seedling @ Old Joe’s Kaia was contacted by Hester van Zijl of Thulare Missions (Section 18A) in Lydenburg a while ago regarding dehydrated meals. This charity organisation cares for the destitute, unemployed, less advantaged people of the Lydenburg and Burgersfort areas. Hester knew that dehydrated food would bring huge relief to the hunger that persists in communities with no fridges and no stoves.
On investigation it became apparent that Thulare Missions really needed their own dehydrator to process the generous donations of bulk food from the Lydenburg /Burgersfort farming communities. We here at The Seedling got the ball rolling and with Cath de Villiers as our contact at Dryers For Africa, Thulare Missions was donated the use of an industrial 18kW AD200 dehydrator, capable of processing up to 200 kg of food in 40 trays at a time.
Yesterday, 12 June, saw the dehydrator being off-loaded at its destination in Lydenburg. The work starts now – installation, training, preparedness for large-scale production to consolidate food and alleviate the desperate need for nutritious meals, distributed and spread over longer periods of time, and also to more people in areas further away.
The food preparation for dehydration will be undertaken by unemployed people from the community with incentives to contribute existing skills, as well as upskilling in order to become more qualified for potential employment outside of this project.
